Houston art collector Andy Moran is a bohemian retired investment banker and real estate investor. He has deep ties with Texas Southern University and its famous art department, developed by Dr. John Biggers and Carroll Harris Simms, who were his close friends. Most of the artists in Andy’s collection have had a connection to TSU and worked in Houston. More information about collecting and Andy’ collection can be found in the video of a conversation he had in the gallery with one of the top experts on African American Art, Dr. Alvia Wardlaw. Dr. Wardlaw has curated more than 75 exhibitions of African American Art, including important retrospectives for Dr. John Biggers and Kermit Oliver, both of whom are well-represented in the collection. We are pleased to offer a link to the interview. It can be accessed here.
The Andy Moran Collection, John Biggers and Friends exhibition at HVFA was also the subject of a recent front-page story in the Houston Chronicle. It can be accessed here.
Andy is beloved in the Houston art and music communities. He has three very special sons, one of whom is the world-famous jazz musician, Jason Moran. He also has ten beautiful grandchildren. All of them have grown up in a loving family environment surrounded by important art and great music.
