Patrick McGrath Muñiz is a Houston-based artist from Puerto Rico. His recent artistic output is largely comprised of drawings and “retablo” paintings. With draughtsmanship that harkens to the masters of the Renaissance, McGrath Muñiz’s art melds Spanish colonial iconography, its figures and symbols, with American pop culture to reflect the colonial roots of our current consumer culture. His art, which is filled with satirical narratives and anachronisms, responds to our globalized neo-liberal consumer society by tracing its origins to the time of Columbus. By employing the artistic methods and techniques of the Renaissance in tandem with the aesthetic of Spanish colonial art, McGrath Muñiz is able to emulate earlier indoctrination strategies and devices from the time of the conquest of the Americas as a way to explore and question the Imperialist agenda as it exists today in America.
McGrath Muñiz has had numerous solo exhibitions at venues including the Reading Public Museum, The Jung Center, Riverside Art Museum, Albuquerque Art Museum, Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum, Station Museum, Brownsville Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts. His art is in the collections of the New Orleans Museum of Art, Albuquerque Museum of Art and History, Savannah College of Art & Design, and Mesa Contemporary Art Museum.
McGrath Muñiz obtained a Bachelor’s Degree (Magna Cum Laude) in Fine Arts from the School of Fine Arts of San Juan, Puerto Rico in 2003 and a Masters Degree (Summa Cum Laude) from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006.
