OBJECTS FROM SANDERS, CAMFIELD, AND OTHER PRIVATE COLLECTIONS

BENEFITNG THE HOUSTON ARTS FOUNDATION

HEIDI VAUGHAN FINE ART is proud to present OBJECTS FROM SANDERS, CAMFIELD, AND OTHER PRIVATE COLLECTIONS BENEFITTING THE HOUSTON ARTS FOUNDATION. The secondary market art exhibition and sale opens at HVFA on Saturday, June 25, 2022, at 3510 Lake Street in the Upper Kirby Galleries, Houston’s oldest gallery row. The gallery will be open from 11 to 8 on opening day. Works presented are from some of the most noteworthy private collections in Houston, including those of Don Sanders, William and Ginny Camfield, Jereann Chaney, Lester Marks, Dr. Alton and Emily Steiner, Bryn Larsen, and other important local collections. The exhibition runs through August 20, 2022. Available artworks will rotate throughout the summer. As works are sold, new art objects will be brought in.

Among artworks in the exhibition will be objects by George Rodrigue, Jesus Rafael Soto, Davis Cone, Jene Highstein, Joseph Havel, Dorothy Hood, Jesus Moroles, Bert Long, Edward Lee Hendricks, William Cannings, Gael Stack, Man Ray, George Krause, Manual, Wendy Watris, Michael Tracy, Karin Broker, Aaron Parazette, Earl Staley, Richard Stout, Ibsen Espada, Joe Mancuso, Maria Antonietta Mameli, Mehdi Moutashar, Aldo Chaparro, Walter Rosenblum, Vittorio Matino, Helmut Barnett, Wulf Barsch, Jim Dine, Charles Pebworth, Troy Woods, David Alysworth, Paul Kittelson, Nick Gentry, Benjamin Senior, John Clement, James McNabb, Masaru Takiguchi, Ron Hoover, John Biggers, Larry Bell, Kermit Oliver, and more.

There will be a series of collector talks and a very special poster sale scheduled during the exhibition. More information will be released after the exhibition opens.

The Don Sanders Collection is owned by Don Sanders, the founder of Sanders, Morris, Harris, LLC, one of the most successful wealth management firms in the United States, in business for more than 30 years. Mr. Sanders is the largest collector of the paintings of George Rodrigue in the world.

The Camfield Collection is owned by William and Virginia Camfield. Bill and Ginny came to Houston in 1964 when Bill was invited by John and Dominique de Menil to join the small art history department which they supported at the University of St. Thomas. In 1970, he joined the Department of Art and Art History at Rice University, where he remained as Professor of Art History for decades, during which time the art community in Houston grew dramatically. Among Professor Camfield’s publications are significant works on Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, and Francis Picabia, including the Picabia catalogue raisonné that is nearing completion. The Camfields have considered several Houston artists among their close friends, and through his publications, Bill has worked with many important artists and collectors of the early 20th century.

Jereann Chaney began the Chaney Family Collection with her husband, Robert, 30 years ago. She has served on the boards of some of Houston’s most influential art institutions, often in a leadership position. HVFA exhibited The Chaney Collection Benefitting Houston Arts Alliance in January and February of this year. The secondary market art sale raised significant funds for HAA’s Emergency Relief Fund. Ms. Chaney is a legendary art patron who has donated significant works to major museums around the United States. Objects from her collection have been exhibited in Red Hot Asian Art Today from the Chaney Family Collection and End Game, British Contemporary Art from the Chaney Family Collection, both at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The Chaney Family: A Contemporary Art Collection was exhibited at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts.

Lester Marks is Mayor Sylvester Turner’s Ambassador to the Arts in Houston. He is frequently recognized on top collector lists globally, including as one of the 100 Collectors in America making a difference in the art world by Art & Antiques, and as one of the Top 200 Collectors in the World by ARTnews. Mr. Marks has been or is currently on the boards of most all the visual arts organizations in Houston. He has been buying and selling art for more than 30 years.

The Alton and Emily Steiner Collection has as its focus the work of rising Houston artists of the past decades. Dr. and Mrs. Steiner loved meeting young artists in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s Core Program. Together they bought what they liked, and trusted their intuition, building a strong collection of Houston artists.

Bryn Larsen is an avid collector of contemporary art and photography. She serves on the boards of some of the most influential arts institutions in Houston and beyond. She is cofounder of Foto Relevance, a Houston gallery focused on the exhibition and acquisition of museum-quality, contemporary fine art photography and photography-based work.

Since 1965, The Houston Arts Foundation has provided funds for the conservation of dozens of Houston’s most iconic public works of art. HAF raises funds and initiates programs to preserve and protect cultural awareness through collaborations with individuals, organizations, corporations, foundations, and with its Adopt A Monument Program. Some of the works of art in the HAF collection include Tolerance by Jaume Plensa, Vaquero by Luis Jimenez, Houston Police Officers Memorial by Jesus Bautista Moroles, Large Spindle Piece by Henry Moore, Geometric Mouse by Claes Oldenburg, and the Sam Houston Monument by Enrico Filiberto Cerrachio. A portion of the proceeds from this exhibition will go directly to fundraising work for HAF’s Adopt A Monument Program.
